Rashel Ceciliano:Is Bringing Her Mexican Roots Into the Future of Girls’ Flag Football

For Rashel Ceciliano, playing flag football on Sunday meant spending much of the day in a car.
After her family moved from Mexico to Texas when she was 14, there was no team near their new home. Rashel wanted to keep playing, so her family trained with her during the week and made an eight-hour round trip for games. Each trip gave her another chance to compete, and another reason to believe she could build a future in the sport.
By May 2025, Rashel had found a place in flag football. Then a serious knee injury took her out of competition. She could no longer play alongside her team, but she stayed involved by coaching a novice youth team. During her recovery, that team won a championship.
It was a different kind of season for Rashel. She had spent years relying on other people to help her reach the game. Now she was helping younger players learn it, encouraging them through their own early mistakes and giving them the attention a new athlete needs to improve.
Rashel returned to competition in 2026. She was named a 2025–26 North Texas Positive Athlete, and Texas Fury lists her on its North Texas 18U roster. She is also a National Honor Society member and yearbook contributor. According to her submission, she has received five college offers and is deciding where to continue her education and playing career.
Rashel credits her faith and her parents’ sacrifices for helping her get this far. The Sunday drives are part of that history, as is the season she spent coaching while injured. Together, they show what it took for one girl to stay in the game, and what she chose to give back once she was there.
